Dr. Ken Markel is our Pediatric Specialist. His thirty-three year career encompasses each and every aspect of dentistry for children and children with special needs.
His concepts concerning health and patient education are the founding principles of the West Side Family Dental Group.
Dr. Ken says “happy and healthy children, along with their families, are our greatest professional joy”. He and his wife Rivka have eight wonderful children between them, and they have three grandchildren and expecting 1 more over the next few months.

Dr. Dena was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She witnessed all four seasons for the first time when she went to college at Washington University in St. Louis where she majored in psychology and minored in Hebrew.
She then returned to Florida to earn her DMD from the University of Florida College of Dentistry. While in dental school, Dr. Dena was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and participated in various volunteer opportunities, including a dental mission trip to the Dominican Republic and the Special Olympics.
Dr. Dena then migrated north to complete her two-year pediatric dental residency program at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, where she trained in one of the most culturally diverse areas in the country.
Dr. Dena is a board-certified pediatric dentist. She is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the New York State Dental Association, the Florida Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. She recently was awarded the 2015 James R. Roche Award of Excellence for attaining the highest score on the Qualifying Examination for the year.
Dr. Dena has been working with children her entire life, from babysitting to tutoring to being a camp counselor, and she is so happy she gets to work one-on-one with children everyday in a fun, caring and nurturing environment.
Dr. Dena enjoys cooking, reading, painting, running and exploring New York City.
Dr. David Berkower was born and raised in Staten Island, NY and graduated from Yeshiva University with a BA in Economics. He then received his DDS degree from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
After finishing dental school, he completed a two residency in pediatric dentistry in Tucson, Arizona and served as chief resident in his second year. He then returned to New York to continue his career as a pediatric dentist.
He enjoys playing basketball, traveling, cooking, live music, spending time with friends and family, and rooting for the Mets, Nets, and Jets. Dr. David is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists.
Dr. Wohl is our Orthodontic specialist and has been with our practice for nearly 20 years. A 1993 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, he has achieved full status as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr.Wohl also holds an Orthodontic Certificate from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he also received a Masters Degree in Oral Biology and a certificate in the Diagnosis and Management of Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Disorders.
Originally from sunny Miami, Dr. Wohl enjoys exotic travel and has trekked his way through the mountains of Nepal and Peru. He has also backpacked through Europe, and toured the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador.
Dr. Wohl currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two daughters Maya and Ella.
Dr. Bales-Kogan, or as many of his patients refer to him as “Dr BK” or “Dr Ariel” has been working in New York City since 2011. He completed his undergraduate B.Sc. degree with a joint major in Physiology & Mathematics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He then moved to Boston, where he attended Boston University to complete his dental degree, an advanced degree in general practice dentistry, a Masters of Science in Dental Public Health, and his Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics specialty certificate. He is currently board eligible with the American Board of Orthodontics, and plans to complete the final stage of certification in the near future.
Dr Bales-Kogan has been involved in both private practice and teaching for the majority of his career. He started teaching as a guest lecturer at Boston University while still completing his specialty residency, and started working as an orthodontist in 2006. In late 2010 he joined St Barnabas Hospital as the Residency Program Director and Section Chief, where his responsibilities included teaching, managing, and administrating the Orthodontic Section. In 2013 he partnered with a pediatric specialist in an underserved population in Queens, where he provides much needed orthodontic care to children, adolescents, and adults.
In his personal life, Dr Bales-Kogan enjoys the diversity of people, food, and culture that only New York City can provide. He enjoys walking in the city, hiking in the wilderness, commuting on his bicycle, and is a huge tennis fan and non-competitive player. He enjoys cooking and baking, decorating and do-it-yourself home projects, and is a wine enthusiast. He lives in the Bronx with his life partner, and hopes to be starting a family soon.
